We tend to imagine faith as invisible — a matter of the inner life, of belief and conviction. And it is. But the God of Scripture never left faith purely in the realm of the abstract. He gave His people tangible things: an ark, a lampstand, unleavened bread, water drawn and poured, oil, bread and wine. Again and again He tied remembrance to something the hands could do and the eyes could see.

Why? Because we are not disembodied souls. We are people who forget. We wake up anxious, we grow distracted, we lose the thread of what we believe by mid-afternoon. God, who made us, knows this about us. So He gives us objects and signs — not as substitutes for faith, but as anchors for it. A thing you can touch has a way of calling the wandering heart back home.
